Subaru CVT Transmission

Subaru CVT Transmission

Owning a 2010-15 Subaru Legacy or Outback means you also own a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Subaru has issued vehicles with CVT transmissions extended warranties. One point five million vehicles are protected by Subaru’s additional coverage on a feature that has proven problematic in the following vehicles:

  • 2010-15 Legacy and Outback;
  • 2015 Legacy and Outback with 3.6 liter V-6;
  • 2012-15 Impreza
  • 2013-15 Crosstrek
  • 2014-15 Crosstrek Hybrid
  • 2014-15 Forester with 2.5 liter four-cylinder
  • 2014-15 Forester with turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder
  • 2015 WRX 2.0.

Original warranty was 5 years /60,000 miles, but Subaru extended it to 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

If this is old news to you, I apologize. But keep reading!

We have what may be new information for you. There is something to be done about circumventing the necessity of a malfunction in these transmissions so you do not need to use the warranty or experience being stranded or without a vehicle for an extended period of time.

According to the schedule printed in the Maintenance and Warranty Booklets published by Subaru, CVT fluid should be “inspected” only for the life of the vehicle, not replaced.

However! This is Interior Alaska and we are special! We we have found there is a Severe Service Table, published by independent fleet management facilities that recommends total fluid replacement on the CVT every 10,000-15,000 miles. “Severe Service Intervals” are defined as driving short distances or at below freezing temperatures.Frequently replacing fluid protects the peculiar inner workings of the CVT and prevents the wear responsible for a break down.

What does this mean for you? Bring your CVT in every 10,000 miles for a fluid change out and avoid the hassle of a blown transmission. It’s so nice to know that Subaru is standing behind this piece of equipment—we love that about them. But if you can avoid a problem, why not!!
