Subaru Repairs Recycled into Non-profit Support

Subaru Repairs Recycled into Non-profit Support

THANK YOU METRO CUSTOMERS FOR SUPPORTING SO MANY NON-PROFITS.  ONE OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS about being locally-owned is supporting our community in non-profit adventures. We enjoy targeting organizations that educate and invigorate life this close to the Arctic Circle. Imagine: The check-engine light comes on in your Impreza and that turns into helping the Fairbanks Mission.  In this blog series we will highlight the programs we choose to support! THE FOLK SCHOOL is a natural fit as a partner for Metro. The Folk School makes education accessible in two ways: It provides classes to students AND it provides students to instructors. Our community is filled with a wealth of information in the form of mentors who are experts in their fields. Be it boat-building or weaving or philosophy, the Folk School provides the administrative and location necessary for Fairbanks to meet and learn.  REPAIR CAFE Metropolitan Garage is part of a world-wide organization known as ... read more

Air Filters and Maggots

Air Filters and Maggots

Traveling this winter, I realized more the do-it-yourselfness we Alaskans have. Case in point: I was staying with friends in a Texas suburb this month. It was Sunday evening and the streets were lined with what looked like squat soldiers--garbage cans--blue for recycle, brown for rubbish. For miles, heels backed into the gutter, standing at attention. They don't have local transfer sites, or "treasure islands" or general meeting places where people can go through each others garbage. Most individuals here wouldn't even THINK of filling their station wagon with bags of garbage to take to town-- so, so gross. Add to that, Texas Heat, and storing garbage on your property is very silly.  Fairbanksans are lucky. In winter, we can easily get an entire pick-up truck's worth of white bags stored up out back with little or no consequences. We sometimes pay when an escaped Husky has a frolic going for the bacon grease, yes. But for most  ... read more

SUBARU MAINTENANCE SCHEDULES (And a little about the "X" feature!)

SUBARU MAINTENANCE SCHEDULES (And a little about the "X" feature!)

We know SUBARUS. As both veterans of the repair industry and veteran Subaru owners ourselves, we can tell you that SPOT-ON MAINTENANCE SCHEDULES are key to keeping costs down on these vehicles. But the term "schedule" is different for Fairbanks. LET'S BE HONEST. There aren't many things more fun to drive on bad roads than a vehicle with Subaru's legendary all-wheel-drive system. OK, well. Hmmmmm.  That is, unless you have a Subaru product with "X Mode"! Push that button, and it feels like a cat on carpet no matter the frost heaves or moose obstacles. X Mode is standard on the Outback and optional on the Forester, and it will help you get up even the worst goat trail or back road in the mud and snow. Lower gear ratios produce additional power to wheels that have secure contact with road surfaces. This software also deactivates the transmission's lock-up clutch to prevent powering slipping wheels. Earlier intervention during ... read more

Boots and Brakes

Boots and Brakes

If you have a heated garage, and you park your Tacoma in it (Oh My Gosh how many of us have heated garages and DON'T park in them because they are full of stuff--that is another blog entirely). As I was saying, IF you have a heated garage AND you park your car in it, read no further. This information is not for you. If you park OUTSIDE and idle your Outback for twenty minutes to take the edge off of an ice-cold commute, this is for YOU. AVOID A TOW BILL BY READING THIS SIMPLE HACK. Depending on how many storms we have had by January, the snow from our shoes forms an iceberg on the driver's side floor. In and out, in and out, the snow builds up. But the heat entering the cabin is usually directed at the windshield so we can see out, at the chest and face for moral support, and somewhat at the feet just because it is rude to leave them out (not that we can ever feel the heat down there). This results in a semi-thawed ice rink on the driver's mat.  ... read more
